The duo planned to stop on Howland Island, a 13,foot-long strip of land in the middle of the ocean, where they would refuel. After taking off on July 2, the plane and its two passengers were never seen again. The official search lasted for more than two weeks but proved fruitless. In the eight decades since, interested onlookers have felt compelled to keep looking.

Late last year, Romeo set out with his person crew from Deep Sea Vision. The team used millions of dollars of advanced equipment—sonar technology attached to an autonomous underwater vehicle—to scan 5, square miles of the ocean floor. A few months later, the researchers were reviewing sonar images when they noticed the plane-shaped object. A new image could provide a crucial clue in the decades-long hunt for answers about the fate of famed U.

Former U. Air Force intelligence officer and pilot, Tony Romeo, captured a sonar image of an aircraft-shaped object resting on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean last month, he told The Wall Street Journal. Romeo believes the image to show the remains of the Lockheed E Electra piloted by Earhart when she vanished without a trace. The image could show a collection of rocks more than 16, feet under the surface, forming the shape of an aircraft, he said.

The duo was last heard from while flying between Lae, Papua New Guinea, and Howland Island, a small coral atoll located just north of the equator in the central Pacific Ocean. Earhart flew a Lockheed Electra 10E, a twin-engined plane roughly the size of a bus, on this expedition. The remains of the aviators and their plane have never been found.

Between September and December , a member crew led by Deep Sea Vision scoured around 5, square miles 13, square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean floor using state-of-the-art sonar and laser imaging technology to search for the aircraft. On Jan. Upon returning to the site where the image was taken, the Deep Sea Vision team learned that the target was in fact a natural rock formation.

By comparison, the Titanic is located at a depth of about 12, feet. Deep Sea Vision said its member crew used an an advanced underwater drone to scan more than 5, square miles of ocean floor in search of the aircraft. The sonar image has intrigued archaeologists while others remain skeptical. Romeo plans another undersea visit to gather more visual evidence.
